Many people need their documents or signatures authenticated in Thailand, especially if they are to be used abroad or for submission to a foreign embassy. This is done by an official known as a Notary Public or a Notarial Services Attorney.
In Thailand, Notary Publics are attorneys who have been granted a special role by the Lawyers Council of Thailand. They can witness and certify documents with an official seal.
Authentication of Documents
A Notary Public is an official that the state authorizes to perform certain functions such as witnessing signatures and statements of persons under oath. These functions are very common in countries with the system of Common Law.
Thailand has not enacted laws to inaugurate this system, but the Lawyers Council of Thailand does register lawyers as Notarial Services Attorneys who are legally qualified to authenticate documents for use overseas. Typically, banks, embassies, schools and government departments will require that important documents such as bank statements, copies of land titles or deeds of sales be notarized in order to be valid for use overseas.
Similarly, wills and testaments must be certified by a notary in order to guarantee that the document is genuine. After being notarized, these documents will usually require further legalization at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Thailand to be valid for use abroad. Konrad Legal offers both a licensed notary and professional translation services at one location on Wireless Road and is close to many embassies.
